The Dead-End Kids

I chose to write about an article from our book called The Dead-End Kids. This article was written by Michele Manges, a writer from the Wall Street Journal. She describes how teen are working part time jobs that are teaching them nothing in return. Some of these teen are working long hours and showing up for class late, sleeping in class, getting bad grades, or are not showing up for class at all. Michele thinks that in the near future due to our economy it will only get worse.
I disagree with this reading. I do not think it is the responsibility of the business to teach anything to their employees besides how to do their job. I think it is important for not just the parents but also our schools to emphasize the importance of money and having a job. It is the parent’s job to pound into the kid’s head how important saving money, going to college and being successful is. Let’s say you own a business and someone come in harping on you because you haven’t taught their kid anything of worth what are you going to tell the parent?

  1. I think that this is not true about a job. Parents should tell their children about the importance of money and how to use it. I do think its not fair for teens to work late and so many hours while they still in school. Teens hours should be at a minimum because they still have more things they have to do. Working would make you tired but you have to take care of your business.

  2. Shawn, I think there are many factors both pros and cons when it comes to teens and jobs. Yes, I think it is important for kids to not have to rely on their parents for money. It can show them that they need to work for what they want, need and have. In my opinion, I think that this is just the way it is now. Many students live on there own, and have to work. I think that even though getting an education is important, depending on situations schools should be a bit more laid back. At least the students are going to school, or trying too put in effort into going to school. I do not think that it is up to the employer to teach employees the importance of money, although some employers already do. I do not think it should be a requirement.
Responding to Lucendias post, I don't agree with your comment about limiting hours for teens. As I stated above some teens support themselves and live on there own. It is hard enough to get a job at a young age, and they need to take what they can get.

  3. I agree with you as well. I think that every teen should have a job and get a lifestyle that adults have. I was 15 years old when I started working. I was also in high school the entire time while working. Sometimes I worked long hours that made me super tired, but I still went to school and had great attendance. I can see where some kids would put off school because they like the money that they are getting. I think that school comes first and you can make better money than you would if you atteneded college, and also finsih high school.
